6 People Killed in Helicopter Crash in West Virginia Mountains

Six people were killed in a helicopter crash on Wednesday evening in Logan County, W.Va., according to the deputy director of the county’s Office of Emergency Management.

The helicopter came down on Route 17 near Blair Mountain, said the deputy director, Sonya Porter. The mountainous area in the southern part of the state is known as Kelly Hollow.

Ms. Porter was not sure what might have caused the crash.

“At the time the crash occurred, I think the weather was clear,” she said.

The aircraft was a Bell UH-1B helicopter, said the Federal Aviation Administration, which with the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.

The Logan County Commissionoffered its condolences to the families and friends of the victims on local television.

“Our prayers are with them,” said Diana Barnette, a county commissioner.

This is a developing story.
