Sarasota, Fla. | $899,000

A midcentury-modern house built in 1971, with two bedrooms and one bathroom, on a 0.4-acre lot

The owner, who bought the property in 2018, has spent four years renovating it, adding a new roof, plumbing and HVAC systems. It serves as a showcase for midcentury style with an extensive collection of period-appropriate furniture, décor and appliances, as well as paint colors and wallpaper throughout.

The house is about a 15-minute drive from the white sand and warm waters of Siesta Key Beach. Legacy Trail, a 18.5-mile walking-and-biking trail on what was once a railway line, is also nearby. Downtown Sarasota is about 15 minutes away.

Size: 1,268 square feet

Price per square foot: $709

Indoors: From the street, a paved driveway leads to the carport. A bright orange front door — one of the seller’s vintage finds — is behind a breeze-block screen.

The house is round, with the bedrooms on one side, the living and dining areas and the kitchen on the other and the bathroom at the center. To the right of the front door is a sitting area with a curved wall papered in a midcentury starburst print. A second sitting area is to the immediate left, behind gold screens that give it a sense of privacy despite the open plan.

The appliances in the kitchen are vintage, including the refrigerator, washer and dryer — all in shades of aqua, a color repeated on the cabinets and breakfast bar.

The primary bedroom, once two smaller bedrooms, is beyond the kitchen. The walls are pink with gold trim, and two windows overlook the side of the property. Next door is a blue guest room with a starburst pendant light that is currently used as an office and media room. Across the hall is the bathroom, overhauled by the seller who added blue tile on the concrete sunken tub and shower and behind the kidney-shaped vanity, which is original to the house.

Outdoor space: The house sits on a generously sized lot, with space in the grassy backyard for a swimming pool or small guesthouse. Palm trees line the front yard, and smaller tropical plants surround the house. The wood ceiling in the carport is brightened by LED fixtures; there is space to park two cars.

Philadelphia | $900,000

An 1890 Victorian rowhouse with five bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms, on a 0.04-acre lot

Although the Northern Liberties neighborhood is just a 10-minute drive from Center City, the neighborhood wasn’t officially part of Philadelphia until the 1850s. For many years, it was a hub for producing beer and was home to the Christian Schmidt Brewing Company, the largest brewery in the city’s history. In the late 19th century, when this house and its neighbors were built, the area was a cross between a city neighborhood and a suburb, conveniently near downtown but less crowded, with ample space for new residential construction.

This house is a few blocks from Girard Avenue, one of the city’s main arteries and home to a lively mix of bars and restaurants. Poplar Park, which has a children’s playground, a swimming pool and tennis and basketball courts, is half a mile away.

Size: 3,020 square feet

Price per square foot: $298

Indoors: The front door at the top of the stoop swings open to an antechamber with a second door that opens to the foyer. To the left is a living room with hardwood floors, original crown molding and a decorative marble fireplace topped with a gilded mirror.

The hardwood floors continue into the dining room, which has whitewashed brick walls and another decorative fireplace. This space opens to an updated kitchen with a cream-colored Bertazzoni range and matching hood, two Sub-Zero refrigerators, custom-made cabinets and a center island. Beyond the kitchen is a breakfast area with botanical wallpaper and a built-in banquette facing a patio. Also on this side of the house is a powder room with a wood vanity.

From the foyer, an original wood staircase leads to the primary suite on the second floor. A walk-in closet connects the spacious bedroom to a bathroom with a claw-foot soaking tub, an exposed-brick wall and a vanity with a marble counter. Across the hall is a space used as a family room, with two street-facing windows and a pendant light.

The staircase continues to the third level, where there are three guest rooms. One is divided by a low wall painted to resemble a playhouse, with a desk nook behind it. The bedroom across the hall has a decorative fireplace that holds a chalkboard. The third bedroom is big enough to hold a twin-size bed or a crib. These bedrooms share a bathroom with a walk-in shower.

A cozy space between the eaves on the fourth floor, with another decorative fireplace and two closets, could function as a large bedroom or study.

In the basement, there is a home gym and storage area.

Outdoor space: A private patio on the main level has artificial grass and is enclosed by a wood fence. There is plenty of space for a table, chairs and additional seating, and in one corner there is a garden. A path leads from the patio to the side of the house, where a door opens to the foyer. The house comes with two parking spots in a lot about a block away.

Sacramento | $899,000

A 1925 Tudor Revival house with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, on a 0.1-acre lot

This house is in Curtis Park, a neighborhood with a number of homes built in the early 20th century, many in Edwardian, Craftsman and Tudor Revival styles. The area takes its name from a park of almost 20 acres, with picnic and sports facilities, just three houses away.

Downtown Sacramento is about a 15-minute drive; Sacramento City College and the Sacramento Zoo are about five to 10 minutes away.

Size: 1,782 square feet

Price per square foot: $504

Indoors: A footpath running through the front lawn leads to the entry, set beneath an arch trimmed in rustic stone, a classic element of Tudor Revival architecture.

The front door opens into the living room, which has hardwood floors, a fireplace with a white mantel and windows with shutters facing the front yard. On the far side of this space is a sunroom with room for bookshelves and a desk.

Through the living room is a dining room that partially opens to a kitchen with a Wolf cooktop, wine storage, marble counters and white cabinets.

A corridor off the dining room leads to two bedrooms. The one near the front of the house has a window that looks into the sunroom; the one at the back of the house has double doors that open to the backyard. These bedrooms share a bathroom off the hallway with a claw-foot tub and porcelain pedestal sink.

The second floor is configured as a large primary suite. The bedroom has sloped ceilings and a nook big enough to hold a comfortable chair; the bathroom has a walk-in shower with a glass door. This level of the house has access to the attic, currently used for storage.

Outdoor space: A patio in back of the house has room for a dining table and barbecue, with raised garden beds on one side. Clementine, lemon and orange trees line the fence around the yard, and a shed in the far corner holds gardening equipment. The driveway on the side of the house is big enough to hold two cars.
