2022 Oscars Nominees List
With two Academy Award bellwethers either postponed (as was the case with the Critics’ Choice Awards) or diminished (the Golden Globes happened in January but were tweeted, not televised), nominations for this year’s Oscars are set to arrive to an unusually open field.
The 94th Academy Awards will recognize movies released between March 1 and Dec. 31, 2021. That was, of course, a period when many Americans had their first in-theater moviegoing experiences since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. And many of the top contenders are movies whose releases revolved around traditional theaters: Of the five films that The Times’s awards-season columnist Kyle Buchanan considers a lock for a best-picture nomination, three — Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Licorice Pizza,” Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” and Kenneth Branagh’s “Belfast” — were physical-theaters-only releases. The other two, Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog” and Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune,” were released both in theaters and on streaming platforms, but are visually ambitious movies that plainly beg to be seen on a big screen.
The ceremony is slated to take place at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on March 27. Nominees will be announced on Tuesday morning. See below for the full list, which will be updated during the announcement.
