Judge John Hodgman on Brunch Parameters

Andy writes: My friend and I have debated the concept of brunch for years. He eats “brunch” in the afternoon. He can eat when he wants, but words have meanings. And brunch is a meal between breakfast and lunch that takes place before noon.

I see you’re writing from Sydney, so thank you for prompting a search for “Australian brunch.” I had no idea! But through the archives of a popular newspaper, I’ve learned that N.Y.C. has been invaded by multiple Australian brunch spots, slinging piccolo coffees, folded eggs and ricotta pancakes, with avocados on top of everything. Sounds good! But I must rule against you. Brunch defies time. So long as it is a weekend, wherever avocado toast, daylight and drinking meet, there is brunch. And unless it’s on asparagus, even Hollandaise sauce, eaten alone out of the fridge at midnight, is brunch. Hodgman brunch.
