This house is in Shelter Island Heights, a hamlet in the town of Shelter Island, in Suffolk County. The neighborhood, which is notable for its well-preserved Victorian homes, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. The property is a short walk from Grand Avenue, home to a hardware store, a post office, a coffee shop and an inn in a building dating to the 1870s. It is less than half a mile from the Shelter Island Heights Private Beach Club; access to the club’s beach and its tennis courts comes with ownership of the house.

This house is on a quiet street, a five-minute walk from a butcher shop, a coffee shop and city hall. It is half a mile from Bayview Park, a green space with a playground and tennis courts, and Horace O’Bryant School, a public school serving students in prekindergarten through eighth grade. Some of the island’s best-known landmarks, including the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and the Key West Lighthouse, are about a mile away, as are several public beaches.

Key West International Airport is a 10-minute drive. Key Largo, a popular starting point for trips through the Keys, is about two and a half hours away. Driving to Miami takes about three and a half hours.

This house was designed by Irving Tobocman, an architect who worked extensively in Detroit and the nearby suburbs. It is 10 minutes from several country clubs, Bloomfield Hills High School and the Cranbrook Educational Community, which includes the Cranbrook Academy of Art, a museum and research facilities.

Driving to downtown Detroit takes about half an hour. The University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, is 45 minutes away. The Canadian border is about 65 miles away; London, Ontario, is a three-hour drive.
